The Hot Rock (1972)

Company: TWILIGHT Time

Starring:  Ron Leibman, Paul Sand, William Redfield, Zero Mostel, Moses Gunn, George Segal, Robert Redford

Product Description: The Hot Rock (1972) is a clever caper film with multiple capers, but all focused on a single, elusive object: the Sahara Stone, long a hot potato between two African countries, now about to be snagged out of its spot at the Brooklyn Museum by a quartet of capable but luckless thieves.

My Review and Thoughts:

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5

This is a mixture of genres, action, comedy and a crime Thriller. It's about a group of guys who steal a huge diamond from a museum, but it turns out that one twist and turn after the other, it won't be that easy to steal the diamond as situations unfold in a comical reality. This is the first time seeing this movie, directed by Peter Yates and starring Robert Redford, George Segal, it is a fantastic little caper of a film.

Twilight Time chose another wonderful film to bring out on their Special Edition 3000 Unit Blu-rays. This was a movie I had never seen before, so it was a true treat to experience it and what better way to experience it, then on a High Definition 1080p transfer that looks beautiful and amazing as they always do in the films they pick. This is a movie that has comedy, action and crime Thriller written all around it. It's a wonderful witty style film. It was beautifully transferred to 1080p. Twilight time always knows how to treat older films, specifically movies that seem to be forgotten by time, giving them a new outlet, bringing them out for a whole new generation to experience.

What shines in this movie is all the actors all those experiences on-screen. The chemistry between all the players, works. That's what makes this film even more stunning, is each player, plays on you as you watch, and you can't help but become a part of the movie through those experiences.

This is this is based on a series of books with the same character, Dortmunder who in the movie is played by Robert Redford. The series of books is written by Donald Westlake. This film is based on the first book in the series. There are others in the series of books that became movies. Bank Shot with George C. Scott. What's the Worst that Could Happen with Martin Lawrence. The movie Why Me with Christopher Lambert.

Donald Westlake was a fantastic author. He is one of the prolific writers, writing over a hundred books, some nonfiction others fictional.

Peter Yates was a director that could give a solid film. He had away with crafting his performers in a solid atmosphere that seemed real life on screen. The way he directed gave everyday life a starring role. He made his films come to life. The movie Breaking Away is one of those shinning experiences of film brilliance that he directed. Yates created very memorable movies from 1968's brilliant classic Bullitt. The very underrated 1973's The Friends of Eddie Coyle. The 1983 Cult Classic Krull. He had a way with crafting many styles of films from wonderful suspense movies like 1980's Eyewitness, 1987's Suspect, 1989's drama Innocent Man, and even stepping into the realms of cult film like I have stated, Krull.

My Rating: 5 out of 5

Another Flawless example of how to treat audio and video on an older film. The film was transferred to high definition 1080p flawlessly. Another example of a fine product by Twilight Time. I see no flaw in the audio and no flaw in the video. The movie has never looked any better.

Audio Commentary with Film Historians Lem Dobbs, Julie Kirgo and Nick Redman. Yet again a flawless commentary by three amazing persons. Three film guru’s that I highly praise and respect and enjoy hearing from each time these extras are given. All three have a true passion for film and that is what counts perfectly.
