Cult Epics Blu-ray: Death Laid an Egg (1968)

Death Laid an Egg (1968)

Company: Cult Epics

Starring: Gina Lollobrigida, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Ewa Aulin, Jean Sobieski, Renato Romano, Giulio Donnini

Product Description: Jean-Louis Trintignant (THE CONFORMIST) as a married man that may or may not be a serial killer, Gina Lollobrigida (John Huston’s BEAT THE DEVIL) as his delectable yet overly domineering careerist wife, and Swedish blonde bombshell Ewa Aulin (CANDY) as his murderous double-crossing mistress, the film is the virtual giallo equivalent to Godard’s WEEKEND in terms of its crass car crash fetishism, savage anti-bourgeois sentiments, and overall anarchic spirit.  Set largely in a hi-tech automated poultry factory that breeds mutant boneless chickens.

My Review and Thoughts:

My Rating: 4 out of 5

This is one true strange and odd feature. It fits perfectly in the realm of Cult Films. Death Laid an Egg is an avant-garde giallo that is a true one of kind. Possibly one of the strangest giallo’s that you will ever see. What better way than to experience this odd, weird and twisty film than on a High Quality and equally impressive and amazing Blu-ray/DVD combo by the wonderful stand out company Cult Epics.

Cult Epics never lets the fans down with great choices of hardcore horror or Drive-In glories of the past, and the ultra-weird. The choice of Death Laid an Egg is that perfect, prime example of a choice for all us diehard cinema lovers of strange, obscure and just plain artistic cinema.

Directed by truly a gifted visionary that I feel has been over looked in the movie world. Giulio Questi is a director that knew what he wanted and knew how to create eye opening visuals and mostly twisted storylines. He was a multi-talented director that crafted many styles of films. From 1967's Django Kill…If you Live Shoot, to 1972’s Arcana. I think it is this feature I am reviewing that most will remember him for. Death Laid and Egg is an oddly unique reality that must be seen and experienced to fully understand and grasp it’s twisted odd nature. I think Cult Epics has honored this director with a great Blu-ray to experience this feature film in a whole new High Definition Blu-ray.

Starring the amazingly beautiful and stunning Gina Lollobrigida as Anna, one of your main characters. Gina was a true international sex symbol. I mean that in all modesty, but it’s true. She was a looker. She graced many parts of cinema including Death Laid an Egg with a gorgeous reality like no other. She flowed on screen and showcased a stunning brilliance. She shines in Death Laid and Egg. I will always remember her in 1959’s Solomon and Sheba alongside the one of a kind great Yul Brynner.

Equally beautiful and stunning on screen in Death Laid an Egg is actress Ewa Brigitta Aulin who plays the part of Anne’s cousin Gabri. She will best be known for her starring role in the wild cult film, 1968’s Candy alongside movie and star heavy weights, John Huston, Ringo Starr, Walter Matthau, James Coburn, Richard Burton and the one and only Marlon Brando. She shined in anything she did. Stopped acting in 1996, and that’s a true shame, she was not only a looker but also a gifted performer.

And finally, is your main character, the bad guy himself Jean-Louis Trintignant playing the character of Marco. A powerful, twisted performance that truly stands out above and beyond mere words. A passionate, powerful, master actor that has graced the cinema world in countless amazing films. It’s always wonderful to trace an actor or actress back in the days in the cinema world and experience them in older films, Death Laid an Egg is a prime example of his acting brilliance. He truly was a true acting thespian on screen. Starring in over 140 performances in his long amazing career. Still acting strong today as of this writing. All the actors and actresses in Death Laid an Egg shined together and created believable and eye opening performances that truly made the watcher become apart of the experience happening on screen.

Death Laid an Egg is truly a Cult Film. A one of kind Cult film. It’s hard to explain Death Laid an Egg in a rational setting of conversation. It’s one of those movies that must be seen to be fully understood. Death Laid an Egg is truly a one of kind feature film. Cult Epics has chosen a perfect Cult film and crafted a perfect High Definition Blu-ray. Cult Epics is one of those companies that know the fans and know what the fans want.

This has never looked so good. The vibrant colors and awesome film-making add to the audio and video of this film. Cult Epics has done this film justice. Unbelievable beauty in the transfer. So crisp, clean and just plain eye opening. A fresh look to this old film. The sound is equally the same. It’s total ear candy to the watcher. I have no issue in any of the sound or video.
